How Long Do Dental Crowns Last?

The mouth is a complex system, and many factors can affect the lifespan of a dental crown, including oral hygiene habits and the daily wear to which it’s exposed. Dental crowns typically last around 15 years or longer if well cared for. However, maintaining excellent oral health can help them last between 25–30 years.

How Do I Extend the Lifespan of My Dental Crown?

Dental crowns can last even longer if you:

  • Avoid grinding or clenching your teeth. Constantly grinding or clenching your teeth can crack or chip your dental crown. If you have a bruxism habit, your dentist may recommend wearing a custom-made night guard to protect your crown and natural teeth during sleep.
  • Practice good oral hygiene habits, such as brushing twice daily and flossing once daily. When brushing, gently scrub your teeth and around the gumline to protect the tooth beneath the crown from decay.
  • Avoid biting your fingernails or chewing on ice, hard candy, and other objects. Using your teeth as tools or crunching on hard foods can damage your crown and natural teeth.
  • Receive routine dental exams and cleanings. During your checkups, your dentist examines your mouth for signs of damage, decay, or gum disease and checks the condition of your dental work.

How Do I Know When My Dental Crown Needs Replacing?

Each patient is unique, and the wear a crown sustains depends on their habits and lifestyle. Porcelain crowns are very durable, but they’re not indestructible. If a crown cracks, breaks, chips, or dislodges, it must be replaced to avoid decay or damage to the underlying tooth.

If a decayed tooth isn’t treated in time, it might need a root canal. An unfitted crown, or an imbalanced bite, is one of the most common reasons a crown fails.

At Shiflett Family Dental, we offer high-quality dental crowns to improve your smile and protect your natural teeth. We also provide crown repair and replacement to ensure your oral health remains top-notch.
